Think cars are sexy? Baby, that's so 20th century. Its car crashes that get this group of perverts perky. In this David Cronenberg-directed mindblower, James Spader and Deborah Unger try to spice up their love life by having affairs and then telling the other in lurid detail. Then Spader gets involved in a cult of freaky collision fetishists. Don't think twisted steel and broken glass are hot? How about oodles of boobles from Holly Hunter, Rosanna Arquette, and Alice Poon. Ironically, it's Deborah Unger who takes off her unders and flashes poon. One of the best of the skin-ful scenes occurs at the 43-minute mark, when Deborah Kara Unger gives us hunger in our pants while she and David get freaky in bed. Their bodies are contorted, but you can still see her bush. Later in the flick, Rosanna shows her left breast while having sex in a Mercedes with Spader. This dude couldn't get much luckier! Then there's Yolande Julian, who wears a black G-string while getting rear-ended in a back seat by Elias Koteas. If you're looking for masturbation fuel at the beginning of this effed-up flick, you can look out for the effortless hot Holly Hunter, who shows off her gorgeous tits in two scenes 15 minutes apart from each other. Then at the 47-minute mark, we finally get to see her bush as she rides Spader in the back seat. Hey, maybe she'll let you in the back door too, Spader! Turn on Crash if you want to be disturbed while you come!

Crash, the 1996 Cronenberg film (not to be confused with the 2004 movie of the same title) might be the most sexual major motion picture of all time. Rated NC17, and based on a novel by J.G. Ballard, the movie is about a group of pansexual deviants who get off on car crashes.

** Rhea Perlman plays the white female coach of a black male basketball team at an inner-city high school. Like every scrappy coach in the history of movies, she gets involved in the personal lives of her players while boosting their morale for the big game at the climax. Although a few scenes develop human interest, it's mostly one clich after another. Steve Gomer directed. P V

Warner Bros. estimatedthat the audience for the Stanley Kubrick film was slightly more femaleand that turnout among 18-25 year-olds was very strong proving that thepicture's appeal was not limited to just older adults. The studio alsonoted that ticket sales over the weekend were somewhat affected by theJohn F. Kennedy Jr. tragedy which kept adults at home glued to their televisionsets for the latest news on the crash of his private plane. Still, EyesWide Shut's opening was impressive consideringits R-rating, sophisticated subject matter, 160 minute length, and intensesummer competition. In fact, the debut performance was similar to the $22.5Mopening exactly one year ago of The Maskof Zorro which eventually grossed $94Mdomestically. Tom Cruise's last film, JerryMaguire, opened in December 1996 with$17.1M and went on to gross $154M stateside and over $270M globally.

John Travolta followedwith The General's Daughterwhich commanded $5.2M putting its cume to date at $87.9M. Families weren'texactly going gonzo for Muppets in Spacethis weekend as the latest feature film in the aging franchise debutedwith a mild $4.8M in sales. Bowing in 2,265 theaters, the Sony kidpic averagedonly $2,131 per starship. Since its Wednesday opening, Muppetsin Space has generated just $6.7M andwas no match for films like Tarzanand Wild Wild Westwhich young ones were more interested in seeing. Previous movies from theJim Henson-created clan include 1996's MuppetTreasure Island ($7.9M opening/$34.3Mtotal) and 1992's The Muppet ChristmasCarol ($5M/$27.3M).

David Hitchcock's losing his wife, Lily, because he's become so obsessed with recording their lives on video. Filtering everything through the camera lens, he deals with reality only in playback mode. Shooting Lily's about his obsessive attempt to understand their break through old tapes which document the progress of their marriage. Shades of Sex, Lies and Videotape? Borman says not. "I use the home movies to mock their history and play with point of view, and the tone I'm trying to establish is closer to Albert Brooks."A native of Detroit and graduate of UCLA's School of Film and Television, Borman cut his teeth directing PSAs and music videos for Motown Records before meeting producer Richard Raddon, who put together the "low six-figure" budget to shoot Lily mostly in 35mm color through private investments. (The video/home movie sequences we see David shoot and watch, roughly a third of the total film, were shot in Hi-8 before being blown up to 35mm.) Borman reports much of the film's actual cash budget went for travel - scenes were shot in Paris, Mexico and Las Vegas. Because Lily is the story of two people who want to be together but part company at the beginning of the film, Borman had to use David's videos to depict a nuanced relationship that makes the audience root for an eventual reunion, and that meant the videos had to be more engaging than the average vacation diary. "We mocked five years in this couple's life in three weeks," says Borman, "changing hair styles, furniture and cars and staging their wedding, bridal shower and birthday parties." At press time the filmmakers were locking picture and gearing up to mix sound; all rights are still available.Cast: Matt Winston, Amy Smallman, Roy Jenkins, Mike Hitchcock, Deborah Theaker, Kelly Kidneigh, Burt Goodman. Crew: Producers, Richard Raddon, David Baxter; Screenwriter/Director, Arthur Borman; Director of Photography, Mark Parry; Production Designer, Jamie Foley; Casting, Maryclaire Sweeters, Editor, Danny Canovas; Composer, John Massari. Certainly pop culture has benefited from the boon in art and photo books. With a title like Star Trek -- Where No One Has Gone Before: A Historyin Pictures text by J.M. Dillard, introduction by William Shatner (PocketBooks, $25 paper), little explanation should be needed except to note thatTrekkie cultists are an incredibly hardy breed, gobbling up the reams ofpaperbacks and specialty books on their beloved television programs andmovies. Meanwhile, for those who still can't get enough Trek, StarTrek is chock-full of pictures of Jim, Spock, Picard, Janeway, the FederationCouncil, scenes from the movies, and the U.S.S. Enterprise. Shouldbe good for a little of that Vulcan Death Grip from your favorite alienlover. 2ff7e9595c
