The bigfile directory contains binary updates that can be used to update the game. The files are not linked to the games of the same name, and will need to be replaced manually. They are highly sought after among modders because of the way they work, and because they are easy to update.
Bigfile updates replace the original files with new files, and there are a limited number of them available. In the latest bigfiles, there is a file called Bigfile.002.tiger, which contains the content of all of the previous bigfile updates. There are also Bigfile.002.x and Bigfile.002.2.x. The first indicates that there are only two updates, and the second that there are three. The latest game version will always be indicated by the most recent bigfile update.
You can download a bigfile update using your favourite mod manager, or you can download a pre-compiled version from the internet. If you download the pre-compiled version you will need to make a backup copy of the main game file, so you can easily restore the game if it breaks. You can usually find pre-compiled bigfile versions online, but it is much safer to download the pre-compiled version.
There are websites that will create a new game with your pre-compiled bigfile update. The update process only needs to be run once.
